What’s going on YouTube? So it wasn’t long ago that Volkswagen was a brand selling the majority of sedans However, as the market has shifted towards SUVs so has the company The latest segment they are expanding into is the mid-size two row segment with this all-new 2020 Atlas cross sport so with a cool coupe like SUV appearance, let’s go ahead and see if this cross sport is a half price Audi q8 Now before we begin here I want to go ahead and thank our friends at Don Jacobs Volkswagen for giving us access to this Atlas cross sport and if you’re the market for any new Volkswagen Make sure you visit their dealership or check out their website So the first thing we’ll start out with here is going to be the front Now all of the trim levels, they will come with this brand new grille design Basically, it’s going to be the same as the refreshed Atlas which is coming out in a few months So you have the three barred look with a black mesh in between the bars And then down here at the bottom You will find this piece of silver trim which gives it a nice rugged. Look now the R line package that comes optional on three of the trim levels and if you choose to have that It will basically remove this silver piece and enlarge this opening for a more aggressive look Now the grille does seamlessly integrate in with these Standard LED headlights. They are the same on every single trim level including the really nice-looking daytime running light However, the turn signal is incandescent Now as far as your different wheel options, you do have a wide variety of choices depending on the trim level So starting with your base S & SE trim level you’ll have an 18 inch alloy and then when you go for the SEL or the SEL premium That’s where you’ll unlock these 20 inch alloy wheels now if you go for the SEL premium Arline you’ll actually have another size larger a 21 inch contrast alloy which is very very large for the class Now as far as your mirrors they are nicely equipped on all the models So you will have standard heating as well as standard blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert However, if you want power folding that’s going to be the SEL premium only Now here at the side you might be curious as to how this atlas cross sport fits within the Volkswagen lineup And it is a hundred and ninety five inches in length Which places it around ten inches larger than the Tiguan and around three inches smaller than the Atlas so it’s kind of the the middle Weighs in between those two models and then walking around to the rear design Here is where you’re going to notice the big styling change as opposed to the regular Atlas because you do have that really cool sloping design kind of reminiscent to the Audi q8 and As far as the features itself are concerned. We do have fully LED tail lights Even the turn signal is LED unlike the ones in the front and then down below We do have a dual phone exhaust setup and if you go for the our line model it it up It is also a quad exhaust setup They draw kind of a line in between this to make it look more sporting Now as far as the safety equipment for this all-new atlas cross sport Volkswagen has thrown in a decent amount of standard equipment Since you do have forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection as standard across the entire lineup Now if you go for one of those higher-end models, you will add more equipment so the SE with the tech package will throw an adaptive cruise control and then if you go for the highest and SEL model That’s going to throw in Lane Keeping Assist Auto high beams and traffic jam assist Well guys that sums up the exterior of this all-new Atlas cross sport So now let’s go ahead and hop inside the interior and see what Volkswagen has done in there So on the atlas cross sport You will find Volkswagens from our entry system on all with the base trim level and They will also throw in a remote start system if you go for the SE technology or up Now just like most other Volkswagen models. You will have a sensor behind the handle so you can just grab it Alright then taking our first peek inside the cabin of this all-new atlas cross sport as you can see most of the interior Design does carry over from the regular atlas Now as far as your interior material and color options, there are quite a few so starting on the base s you’ll have cloth seating in Titan black only and then when you go for the SE trim That’s where you’ll start to have v-tex leatherette with your choices of black or beige Now finally when you go for the SEL premium, which is the top trim level, that’s where you’ll get real leather You have the choice of black beige or a special dark red combination, which is something currently not available on the regular atlas I’ll turn you over here to your door as you can see it is very nicely appointed You have a nice leather trim right here on the armrest as well as a really nice looking stitch leather portion right here The top part is also padded and you have a nice trim as far as your windows all four are one touch automatic And then coming down here to seat itself it is a 10-way power dusting seat with two-way lumbar support on all but the very base model and Also on the SEL up you will find three person memory Now like I was already saying this is the SEL so that falls under the v-tex leatherette Now even though this isn’t real leather as you can see, it is pretty attractive as far as the design and it feels reasonably realistic Now like I already mentioned the interior is mostly like the Atlas though, there are some differences throughout the cabin But as far as the materials that is pretty much the same so you will find a soft touch Plastic across the upper parts of the dash here with a stitching detail dropping down here to the middle You’ll find some type of trim. It does vary depending on the model This far as your lower areas. These are all hard touch But as you can see everything fits together really really well, and that’s a big old Volkswagen way Also in typical Volkswagen fashion, you have the push button start mounted right down here on all the base model Now this right here is one of the features that remind me of Audi because this is Volkswagens 10 inch digital cockpit Which is very very similar to Audi’s virtual cockpit system This comes on the SEL and up and it does a lot of the same things as virtual cockpit including the ability here to punch your map display up and then also minimize the gauges so that it takes up most of The screen just be aware. You cannot have the map on both this display and the main display at the same time Now one of the biggest interior differences with this cross port versus the atlas that’s out right now is that we have a brand new Steering wheel. This is a new design for Volkswagen As you can see it kind of has a flat bottom design really nice leather wrapping on all but the base model and you’ll notice There new emblem feature front and center right here as far as the steering wheel itself It is manually tilt and telescoping and the SEO and up also includes steering wheel heating Alright, so let’s go ahead and talk about interior storage Now as you can probably predict even though this is a smaller SUV It does keep all the generous storage options from the regular Atlas including this gigantic center console as you can see Really large really deep and it has a nice felt lining on the bottom as well as the USB port Furthermore you have your two cupholders and I know they’re really large and deep bin with a felt lining on it This does also serve as a wireless phone charger and you have some more connections in the bottom of it Now taking a look at these shifter here This is just a regular shifter, of course, so you pull back your drive you can go to the right if you want to shift manually, but none of the models are gonna come with paddle shifters and Then when you go into reverse, you will find this regular backup camera on the vast majority of models Once you go up to the SEL trim level, that’s where you’ll get parking sensors and then the SEL premium trim level will throw in a 360 degree camera system with the automatic Parking Assistant And then of course behind the shifter you have your electronic parking brake as well as your multi-terrain drive mode select controllers All right, so now we’ll move on up here to the climate control system now This is the dual zone automatic setup It comes on all but the base model and as you can see in typical Volkswagen fashion It is very simple to adjust with some big easy-to-use knobs Additionally, you will find that three states the heating that’s also standard on all but the base model But you’ll have to go up to the fully loaded SEL premium if you want see ventilation Alright so next up the dashboard is going to be the audio system now, this is very similar to the situation with the vented seats You have a six speaker sound system on all the trim levels except for the very top end model Which comes with a Fender audio system. So let’s go ahead and sample that standard system I’m happy to report that this bass sound system. Sounds very nice We know which is certainly a good thing since it is on the majority of the trim levels All right now checking out the display here This is the eighth inch display which comes on almost all the models except with the base model with a six and a half inch display And then as far as the software, this is the newest Volkswagen infotainment system So you do have the proximity sensing on this model here. We have the navigation on the SEL and up and In additionally, you will find both Android auto and apple carplay standard across all of the trim levels Now moving on up from there you will find it auto-dimming they are surprisingly standard on every single trim level and Then beyond that you Have a very large panoramic moonroof on the SEL trim level and higher It is also optional on the SE technology package And as you can see, this is very very large It goes all the way back to the behind the second row of passengers there. And of course the front portion does open up Okay, so that is going to conclude the tour of the front part of this cross ports cabin So now I’ll hand it off to Mason to see how the back is set up Now first hopping back at this Atlas cross sports rear seat I have to say my first impression that it’s really really spacious back here But before I get into that, I want to talk about the feature set so here in the center All of the models will have rear vents However, you will be missing out on the light tri-zone climate from the regular atlas model none of them will have that and also You will need to go to the SEL premium to throw in the three-stage heated rear seats as well as rear windows sun shades Now down below that on this model. We do still have plenty of connections We have two smart charging USB ports as well as a 115 volt household style outlet and here in the center We do have a fold-down armrest with cupholders inside Now going back to the point of space The technical measurement is 40 inches of rear legroom and 30 in 38 inches of rear headroom Which does place it above most in the class besides for the Chevy Blazer Which is pretty much identical to and behind drew sitting position. I have to say this is an absolutely massive amount of space I probably have at least a foot if not a foot and a half of space behind the same position and my feet can easily Slide up underneath the seat So definitely You’re not gonna have any issues hauling a family back here now walking up to the tailgate It is going to be Power on all but the very base model and if you go for the SE tech trims and higher it Is also hands-free. So in order to open it just waive foot under the bumper And once inside of this area you’re once again gonna find a really large amount of space It’s rated at 40 cubic feet of space behind the second row seats and that expands all the way up to 78 cubic feet If you fold the seats Now like I was mentioning that is a lot larger than most in this segment, so that beste Nissan Murano Chevy Blazer It’s actually a huge amount of space for this segment of vehicle So I think you’re going to be very pleasantly surprised and as far as how a Volkswagen finishes it back here It is finished nicely. We have a nice carpeted floor board as well as lighting We have a 12-volt outlet on the side here and up underneath of the floor. We do have a spare tire Now the passenger seat is going to be 8 way power adjusting on the SEL trims and higher and In front of the passenger the glovebox is good sized. It’s nicely dampened And you do also have a CD player inside and up top. We do have a really large Sun Visor as a Mirror and light and it does also detach as well as extend But anyway guys that sums up all of the rear areas of this Atlas cross sport So now it’s going to take it out in the road and see if the sporty design matches with a sporty dynamics All right, so first taking off here and this atlas cross sport Now we have driven the Atlas the regular version About two years ago For what I can remember You know as far as power and stuff This does feel pretty similar as you would expect because it does share the same powertrain setup Now what we have in this model is the upgraded engine. That’s the 3.6 liter Volkswagen vr6 producing 276 horsepower 266 pounds of torque it is available. Like I said as an option on most of the trim levels Now if you go for that base engine, that’s actually a 2-liter or turbo four-cylinder, and that’s going to produce 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque which honestly is pretty still healthy numbers for the segment of vehicle One of the things that first struck me sign right here in the cabin is just how quiet it is in here it is just a tremendously quiet It really It wasn’t long ago. We did the q7, you know, you can kind of feel some of that already influence This feels very premium. And how question is you don’t hear wind noise You don’t hear a tire noise, you know, you can just carry on a conversation just barely You’re super spring Yeah, I will get out our sound level meter and do a test here, but I suspect it’s gonna be pretty low 15 Yeah, yeah that kind of confirms that you know, we’re looking at 51 decibels Which is honestly one of the lowest readings that we’ve gotten you know on the sound level meter Which does it goes to show you, you know? That was like he said that was one of the first things that we noticed was how quiet it was in here You know a highway speed even on rough roads. It’s very very quiet and refined And also kind of going with that is the you know ride quality You know as you’ll see throughout this test-drive, you know when you hit a bump you really can’t feel it it does still carry that you know German influences into its driving ride quality as well as Its quietness inside this cabin One of the other really smooth aspects is this auto start/stop system It feels very Audi-esque In the way that it restarts without hesitation Without any type of shuttering or anything, really really nice And getting up to speed once again really kind of one of the main characteristics of this vehicle is just kind of a smoothness and the Standard 8-speed automatic transmission really plays into that very smooth fires on shifts quickly But also is pretty responsive when you put your foot down to drop a gear get you back up speed whatever you need to do Really no complaints that just kind of blends into the background Now it is also available in front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive unless you go for that top-end SEL premium Our line that’s going to have these metered all-wheel drive Now do you want to talk for a second about the actual driving dynamics because this is actually one area where to me this you it feels pretty American you could say you can tell that of course the Atlas and this as well we’re designed specifically for the US market and it does have that American influence and the fact that Unlike a lot of German vehicles. It doesn’t really have that kind of sporty feel this feels decidedly more comfort oriented as we discussed of course the ride quality is Fantastic, but you do it right on softer Springs because of that you do have a decent amount of body roll as you go around corners Also, the steering is definitely on the lighter side You know perfectly fine perfectly responsive but definitely on the lighter side of things And the last thing that I do want to talk about here is the fuel economy So with this Atlas cross sport, you’re not going to get great fuel economy But it is it’s okay for the class. So if you want to go for the two-liter turbo Front-wheel drive that’s gonna be the best fuel economy in the bunch coming in at 21 City 24 highway 22 combined and then if you go for the 2-liter turbo all-wheel drive that’s going to go down to mpg combined if you want to go for the v6 front-wheel drive that’s going to be pretty pretty low fuel economy but 17 City 23 Highway 19 combined and then the all-wheel drive is not going to really affect your bottom line for that v6 model for the combined rating But you know that is worth nice around 2 mpg worse than the Chevy Blazer But it’s really not too much worse than stuff like the Nissan Murano So it’s just kind of you know, it’s it’s okay fuel economy for the class So at the beginning of the video we asked the question is this a half price out eq8 Well, the answer is kind of yes, and no Yes Is definitely kind of the way it looks this is certainly a sporty or more Interesting as that hip kind of coupe SUV, like look which most of the rivals certainly don’t offer They’re a lot more plain, you know a lot more traditional looking on the no side though As far as the dynamics, this is certainly a more comfort oriented vehicle Even though it looks a little sporty or on the outside. It definitely keeps all the traditional Atlas characteristics So it is definitely a very comfortable and spacious family vehicle but if those things sound Like the type of vehicle you’re looking for then Definitely stop by your Volkswagen dealership and see if you want the two row Atlas cross sport All righty, and now let’s go ahead and discuss the pricing for this all-new cross sport So the below MSRP s are going to be for the 2-liter turbo with front-wheel drive So starting with the S that’s going to come in at thirty thousand five hundred and forty five bucks The SE is thirty three thousand nine hundred and forty five SEO technology se technology is thirty five thousand nine forty five the SEL which is what we have here is thirty nine thousand five forty five and then the SEL premium That actually come standard with the v6 engine and all-wheel drive that’s going to start at forty six thousand two hundred ninety five bucks Now we do have the v6 with all-wheel drive as well as optional floor mats for two hundred thirty five bucks um, and then when you add the destination charge of 1020 this particular model as equipped comes in at forty four thousand five hundred Which you know I have to say is it’s a pretty good price point especially for something in this class of vehicle You know, it’s right in line with most of its rivals and this does have a lot to offer especially in this SEL trim level Well guys we enjoyed watching this in depth look at the 2020 Volkswagen atlas cross sport.
