What’s the best part about dominating the rival?>>This is guys who you’ll be living around for the rest of your lives. Children will likely know each other and to beat a rival can never be taken away and it is more delicious than any other win.>>What’s it like to lose to a rival?>>You’d have to ask someone else but these cougars it’s been tough sledding. Utah state as been really good and I’m glad they had such a big win and it’s a feeling that’s not as common now as it has been.>>Who was the MVP?>>There were a lot of players and I’d say both quarterbacks, Jaren hall and Baylor romeny were close to perfect. The quarterback rating takes lots of things into account. 50 is average, 100 is perfect, Baylor Romney was 91, Jaren hall was 98. That’s without Zach Wilson. They were close to perfect and in different ways but they were in firm command. The moment wasn’t too big. They knew exactly what they wanted and it was a monument to leadership in there.>>Baylor Romney and Jaren hall, BYU wins 42-14. Were you more impressed by the offense or defense?>>More by the offense because of how they did it. The pass game was so efficient. Running backs contributed terrifically butthat banged up offensive line pounded the aggies into oblivion. They did it again, gouged the defense, did it again and again and this is more than cool, this is a message to Utah state. They had their fun and now it’s over. It was a message to the cougar players that they’re not getting pushed around. I thoughtthat was fantastic and the defense did really well too but the offense with their efficiency and the dominance of that run gamewas phenomenal.>>After the usf loss there have been so many changes. What are you noticing about that in terms of creativity and progression?>>Creativity has been fun with the play calling. That’s a collaorative process and in this game it was a thing of beauty where every time the Utah state defense thoguht they knew what the tendency would be they came up with something that would take advantage of the tendency with fleeflickers and crazy stuff and jet sweeps when you don’t normally do those and I really liked that. The other thing im’ seeing is progression at the quarterback position. When the quarterbacks are king plays, you get first downs. Now you can run counters off of the staple plays. You can run even more and keep the defense off balance and the quarterbacks are integral to that. The thing that real ystood out was his feet in the pocket. Lots of times quarterbacks are nervous and they have happy feet. He would stand back and fi there wasn’t pressure his feet wouldn’t’ move. If the qb is looking left, his feet and eyes will move that way and his feet follow the eyes but when he was looking in one direction, his feet were calm. His eyes were calm and tells me his heart was calm and that is fantastic. He would break out and run and all that stuff was good but the calmness in the pocket I loved and Romney just extended what he did against Boise state. That’s so important on vertical routes where it gives the receiver a chance to adjust and put himself in a position where he can make that catch. Romney is so good and those two things stood out.>>I’m glad you brought up the word calm because not only was Jaren hall calm but Baylor Romney’s resting heart rate is somewhere between 10-12 because he’s so unfazed. How do you see the season play out?>>You have three guys you can win with, third string walk on beat Boise state but this is a ranked team that had the inside track to a new years six and Romney led the BYU upset so that’s really good, Jaren hall puts everything together, Zach Wilson when he comes back might have to compete for the starting job. He’s just a baller. He has that knack to make a play. It’s fantastic and that’s good but one thing he’s improving on is doing what we saw Jaren and Baylor do which is made the play on schedule instead of the spectacular baller play so seeing that will help him be a better quarterback and here’s my thinking, there’s an axiom in football that you don’t lose your starting job to an injury. That’s usually true but you lose your job to someone playing better than you and even with all his promise, Jaren hall is throwing and running with the best of them and Romney is showing he can win as well and this will be a difficult decision for the coaches because all three can win and how long has it been since BYU has had riches at quarterback that you can’t decide which one you want? It’s been so long since that’s happened.>>4-4 record, 4 to go, don’t slkeep on Idaho state on BYUTV.>>Never sleep on Idaho state.>>At UMass, San Diego state. Do you think BYU runs the table?>>That would be a terrific achievement but San Diego is ranked right now and liberty, don’t sleep on the flames, they’re 6-3 and if BYU is able to win one of those it’ll be a good accomplishment. If they win both, it’ll be cause for celebration. Don’t sleep on UMass because they beat BYU when they weren’t supposed to and it hurts and Idaho state don’t sleep on them and Idaho state is struggling but BYU has shown that they can rise up and lose to teams they should beat. If they sweep it’ll be fantastic but I do expect them to get at least 6 wins.>>We’re ready to hang a mountain west championship banner if we beat San Diego. You cool with that?>>Absolutely. I miss the days of the mountain west. There are a lot of advantages for playing independent and the different things they’ve bene able to do because of the number of power fives and there’s good things about Independence but mountain west was so fun.>>Good to talk to you.
